A Guide to Proper Wine Pronunciation

A Guide to Proper Wine Pronunciation

BY JOSSELINE CARBONARE AT THE DAILY MEAL

If you love trying new wines and you find yourself ordering a glass every time you go out on a date or at work dinner parties, asking for the selection offered or simply pronouncing the wine you want without any slip ups can really take you from embarrassing yourself in front of your colleagues to making others question whether or not you studied French in Paris.

Let’s be honest, everyone’s had an “Actually, its pino-gree-jo” moment, because most of the time when we come across wine it’s either poured into a glass by the bartender who asked you “red or white?” or written on a bottle that looked fancy and received great reviews — so you bought it. And unless you have a tongue for languages, butchering the name of a wine has happened to us all at one point or another.

Even if you are the most well-versed in wine selection and happen to know practically every wine in the book, mispronouncing the name of the wine throws every ounce of credibility you might have ever had out the window (sorry).

So, if you’ve ever felt awkward ordering a glass at the bar and have said, “I’ll have what she’s having,” or avoided talking about wine because you were pretty sure the last time you tried to pronounce the name properly the waiter laughed at you, don’t worry — we’ve been there and have got you covered. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the hardest wines to pronounce so the next time you are in a mood to order a glass, you can pronounce it right blunder-free — and with confidence!

Just flip through the slideshow for a quick wine pronunciation 101.

Cheers!
